Beoremote Halo + Sonos
Use the Bang & Olufsen Halo to control your Sonos speakers: volume on the wheel, playback, favourites, and rooms.
Out of the box, the Beoremote Halo only controls Bang & Olufsen products. If the music in the room comes from Sonos, the Halo has nothing to show. There are two ways to change that, and they use different parts of the Halo.
The Halo only lists B&O products
You set up a Halo in the Bang & Olufsen app and choose which B&O products it controls. Those products get the Halo's native audio and video control: the Now Playing view, volume on the wheel, sources, and TV inputs. Sonos speakers never appear in that list. Separately, the Halo has a home automation mode, where another system can show its own pages of buttons through Bang & Olufsen's open Home Automation API.
Option 1: Sonos buttons on the home automation pages
A client for the Home Automation API puts a page of Sonos buttons on the Halo: play, pause, skip, favourites, with the wheel on a button changing the volume. You can run it through Home Assistant, which has a mature, local Sonos integration (see our Beoremote Halo + Home Assistant guide), or write your own service with Bang & Olufsen's Python library and talk to Sonos directly.
Either way, Sonos lives on the Halo as a set of buttons. The Halo's own audio view, with Now Playing, stays empty. The Halo also accepts only one Home Automation connection at a time, so everything you want on that Halo has to go through that one client.
Option 2: Sonos in the Halo's native audio control (Lydbro Hello)
Lydbro Hello makes your Sonos speakers appear on the Halo the same way a Bang & Olufsen speaker would. The Halo's Now Playing view shows what is playing, the wheel sets the volume, next and previous work, your Sonos favourites show up as sources, and you can join rooms from the Halo. Control works both ways: change the volume or track in the Sonos app and the Halo follows. Real B&O products keep working on the same Halo.
The same goes for video: your TV appears in the Halo's video control with power, sources, and volume. Hello also does everything in option 1, with home automation pages for lights and scenes, and because it talks to every system itself, one Halo can control Home Assistant, Sonos, Bluesound, Lutron, and TVs from different brands at the same time. It runs entirely on your local network.
Hello is aimed at hotels, residential custom installations, and anyone fitting out several rooms. Contact us with your project and we will help you plan it.
What you can control
- Volume on the wheel, and mute
- Play, pause, and skip tracks
- Start Sonos favourites and playlists
- Group and ungroup rooms
- Now Playing in the Halo's own audio view (option 2)
- Lights and scenes alongside the music
Which do you need?
- A page of Sonos buttons is enough: option 1, through Home Assistant or your own code.
- You want Sonos and your TV in the Halo's own audio and video control, with Now Playing and the wheel, or one Halo connected to several systems: option 2, Lydbro Hello.
