Beoremote Halo + Home Assistant
Put lights, scenes, blinds, and music on the Bang & Olufsen Halo, driven by Home Assistant.
The Beoremote Halo has two kinds of control. Its native audio and video control shows what is playing, sets the volume with the wheel, and switches sources and TV inputs, but only for Bang & Olufsen products. Its home automation mode shows pages of buttons for lights, blinds, and scenes. This guide covers how to bring each of them into Home Assistant.
The official integration does not cover the Halo
Home Assistant's Bang & Olufsen integration controls Mozart-based speakers and the Beoremote One paired to them. The Halo is not part of it.
Home automation pages: the open Halo API
For the home automation mode, Bang & Olufsen provides an open Home Automation API: a WebSocket on the Halo where a client sends a page and button layout and receives every button press and wheel turn back. Bang & Olufsen also publishes a Python library for it, so you can write a small service that sends your pages and forwards events to Home Assistant. To make buttons show real state, the service also has to watch Home Assistant and push updates back to the Halo: a lit button when the lights are on, brightness on the ring.
Whoever writes the client, this API only reaches the button pages. A media player from Home Assistant can be a button with a volume ring, but it never appears in the Halo's audio and video control. The Halo also accepts only one Home Automation connection at a time.
Native audio and video control: Lydbro Hello
Lydbro Hello is the only way to use the Halo's native audio and video control with products that are not from Bang & Olufsen. Any media player in Home Assistant, plus Sonos, Bluesound, and TVs from different brands connected directly, appears on the Halo like a B&O product: the Now Playing view, volume on the wheel, sources, and TV power and inputs. Control works both ways, so changes made in an app or anywhere else show on the Halo.
Hello also covers the home automation pages. You build them in Hello's web UI using the Halo's own icons, every press and wheel turn arrives in Home Assistant through a native integration, and buttons follow the state of the entities you link them to. Because Hello holds the Halo's one connection and talks to every system itself, the same Halo can drive Home Assistant, Sonos, Lutron, and your TV at the same time. MQTT and webhooks are available for Crestron, Control4, and other systems.
For installers, Hello sets up each Halo from its web UI (Wi-Fi, room name, and which products it controls), with no B&O app or account needed on site. Contact us with your project.
Ideas for the Halo's pages
- Scenes: Dinner, Cozy, Movie, Good night
- Lights with brightness on the wheel
- Blinds and curtains, with position on the ring
- Gate, garage, and front door
- In a hotel room: do not disturb, make up room, room service, request car
Which do you need?
- Buttons for scenes and lights are enough: a client for the Halo Home Automation API does the job, your own or Lydbro Hello.
- You want the Halo's own audio and video control for Sonos, Bluesound, a TV, or any Home Assistant media player, or one Halo connected to several systems: Lydbro Hello.
